FEELING FIONA’S FURY
Tropical Storm Fiona has taken shape in the Atlantic and is expected to reach the northeastern Caribbean late Friday. AccuWeather forecasters say the storm will track north through the weekend, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding, and damaging winds. As Fiona moves through the Antilles late this week and the weekend, the system will bring up to 4 inches of rain, with some areas in the mountains of Hispaniola seeing up to 8 inches. A small area of up to 12 inches of rain could fall in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The heavy rainfall may produce flash flooding, as well as mudslides in higher terrain.
As the storm moves across the northern Caribbean it will also bring strong, damaging winds. Businesses along the projected storm path could see wind gusts of 40-60 mph, which should reach the eastern Leeward Islands Friday and spread to Puerto Rico by Saturday. If the vertical wind shear of the storm lessens, there is concern that the storm could become stronger than anticipated. That means more significant impacts across the northeast Caribbean. Fiona could track farther north than expected, causing greater implications.
