ACCUWEATHER WARNS BUSINESSES TO PREPARE FOR PAIR OF STORMS

AccuWeather's expert meteorologists are monitoring a pair of storms that will impact the West Coast into the weekend. The first storm will move into the Pacific Northwest and Northern California Wednesday through Thursday; another storm will impact much of California Saturday through Saturday night. It's part of a series of storms that will impact the West Coast through the middle of January.

The first storm will bring heavy rain and mountain snow to parts of Oregon, Washington, and Northern California, giving Southern California a break from the heavy rainfall. Widespread rainfall of up to 3 inches is expected from southern British Columbia through western Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. A few areas of southwestern Oregon and Northern California could receive more than 6 inches of additional rainfall.

Businesses should prepare for disruptions to logistics; air travel delays are also possible around San Francisco. The heavy rainfall will bring the risk of flooding, landslides, and road closures. Heavy snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades, along with periods of rain, could bring an increased risk of avalanches.

A second storm will arrive Saturday and will impact most of California, including the southern part of the state that wasn't affected by the first storm. Areas of heavy rain and snow will risk more flooding and mudslides, which could lead to downed trees and extended power outages.

Businesses in these areas should keep an eye on this system and should:

  • Identify hazards most likely to impact your location & cause business disruptions.
  • Take steps to minimize inventory loss due to flooding from torrential rain. If your warehouse is in a low-lying area, you should take precautions.
  • Expect ground logistics disruption from drifting snow, flooded roads, downed trees, and power outages due to road closures.
