Alexander DaSilva - AccuWeather
Lead Hurricane Forecaster
After graduating from Northern Vermont University (formerly Lyndon State College) in 2020, Alex joined the AccuWeather team and immediately became heavily involved with long-range forecasting. Alex has helped produce seasonal forecasts for some of our largest clients and is highly regarded due to his expertise in long-range and hurricane forecasting and communication, despite being with the company for only a few years. Alex has combined his two passions- long-range and tropical forecasting – leading AccuWeather’s tropical team. Alex led the production of AccuWeather’s 2023 Atlantic, Eastern Pacific, and Central Pacific Hurricane forecasts and is the point person regarding questions on the upcoming season. Alex also serves as the Assistant Forecaster Hiring Coordinator – an important role in identifying top talent.
Jonathan Porter- AccuWeather
Senior Vice President, Weather Content and Forecast Operations and Chief Meteorologist
Jonathan Porter is AccuWeather’s Senior Vice President, Weather Content and Forecast Operations and Chief Meteorologist. He is one of AccuWeather’s most accomplished subject matter experts. In this key leadership role, he blends his background in meteorology, weather news forecasting, and information technology to collaborate with the world’s leading government meteorological services and other key data providers to acquire top-tier weather information and content to integrate the most advanced weather data and technologies into AccuWeather’s products and services. Jon led AccuWeather’s B2B unit, AccuWeather For Business (formerly AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions or AES), for four years, delivering valuable new products to the company’s portfolio to help businesses minimize losses and liability while maximizing profits and operational efficiency. AccuWeather For Business achieved significant growth during his tenure.
Jon joined AccuWeather in 2004, after graduating from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Meteorology and minor in Information Technology. For several years, Jon was a software engineer on a dedicated team, writing software to quickly and accurately process weather content through AccuWeather’s Enterprise IT Architecture. After serving as a Technical Account Manager, working directly with top global digital media partners to help them integrate data and content with their products, Jon was named Director of Innovation and Development in 2012 and promoted to Vice President of Innovation and Development in 2015.
Jon is a Professional Member of the American Meteorological Society. In 2012, he was appointed to the AMS Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting. He also serves on an alumni committee for Penn State’s Department of Meteorology. Jon frequently delivers presentations at conferences and professional meetings – specifically focused on the exchange of weather data and warnings.
Ron Derrick - Whataburger
Senior Corporate Emergency Manager
While spending over 30 years in the fire, EMS, and emergency management fields, Ron received degrees in Business and Emergency Management from Schreiner University and Jacksonville State University, respectively. Ron then transitioned into private Emergency Management and Business Continuity.
Ron spent numerous years as an emergency manager for several cities and counties in Texas, and he decided to hang up his boots and radio and go into the hospital Safety and Emergency Management Department of the Baptist Health System in San Antonio. This incorporated the environment of care and emergency management for five large hospitals and one teaching center. After being at Baptist, Ron then took his talents to the military insurance giant USAA as a Senior Business Continuity Advisor stationed in the company Command Center. This included worldwide emergency management and business continuity, ensuring the safety and needs of military officers and families. Then, six years ago, Ron came over to his current job as the Senior Corporate Emergency Manager for Whataburger Restaurants. In this position, Ron manages all Crisis Management and Business Continuity incidents for over one thousand restaurants in fifteen states.
Ron continues to hold multiple certifications in emergency services, including firefighter and a licensed paramedic. He also has certifications as a CBCP and has been a certified Texas Emergency Manager. Ron is also on the National Board of Directors of the Association of Continuity Professionals (ACP).
Ron is married and loves to play golf and do DIY projects at home. Ron volunteers a large amount of time to charities, including the San Antonio Food Bank and the Valero Texas Open golf tournament, that contributes an extraordinary amount of its proceeds to pediatric charities.
Tyler Knowlton - AccuWeather
Director of Communications Communities and Partnerships, Plume Labs by AccuWeather
Tyler has worked on international, national, and local campaigns and projects—from leading Canada’s digital engagement strategy for the country’s 2010 presidency of the G8 and G20 summits and working as the chief strategist on digital innovation at Canada’s Department of Global Affairs, to leading province-wide public engagement commissions on rural and urban economic development in his role as Chief Public Engagement Strategist for the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (2014).
Building on his work with public engagement and deliberative policy development, he has gone on to develop graduate-level courses for the University of Central Asia focusing on public participation in Afghanistan and Central Asia (2016).
