“Thank you and the team for the great session today! On March 16, 2022, an EF1 tornado touched down in Sarasota, Florida, around 2:10 pm. I received a SkyGuard Tornado Warning notification at 1:51 pm, putting us under a warning from 2:10 pm to 2:25 pm. I received a SkyGuard Tornado Warning cancellation message at 2:21 pm. The impact area was our Sarasota Memorial Hospital campus in Sarasota. I quickly checked local news outlets, but no watches or warnings were issued for this event. The NWS sent an email at 3:44 am forecasting severe weather for our area during the day of March 16th. We were in the marginal risk category with expected impacts of damaging wind gusts/isolated tornadoes. Later in the afternoon, I began to see information about the tornado that touched down in Sarasota on several of the local news stations. We were lucky to have AccuWeather in place to receive the notification prior to the tornado event. This allowed us the time needed to alert staff so that they could take cover.”
This morning we issued a reviewed tornado notification to a few health locations that were in the same county as an NWS tornado warning, but not within the polygon. After explaining the reviewed notification process, our contact began raving about our service. He said it saved his facility from pulling beds into the hallways, and he was very thankful that we sent that across. He also told me his plan was to walk across the street to a competitor so that he could tell them about what we had just done for them. The competitor has just as many beds in their hospital and had actually proceeded to pull those beds into the hallway upon seeing the NWS warning.
