Spring snow and severe weather

An area of low pressure moving east out of the northern Plains will begin to merge with another area of low pressure tracking across the Southeast later today, setting the stage for a potent spring nor'easter to take shape. Heavy thunderstorms are expected across the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic today with rain in excess of 1 inch per hour, raising concerns for flash flooding in the area. Farther north, a mix of rain and snow is expected from central Pennsylvania through the upper Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region. Tonight, heavy rain will impact major cities like Philadelphia and Boston as the strengthening storm moves into New England. Gusty winds will batter the coastline there and coastal flooding is also possible. On Tuesday, the powerful storm will move into southern Quebec with heavy rain and gusty winds.

snowfall-1

The heaviest snow will come down from northern Ohio into Pennsylvania during the late afternoon/evening rush hour. This could result in reduced visibility and dangerous road conditions. Up to a foot of snow is expected in the Adirondacks and Poconos of New York and in Pennsylvania, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 24 Inches. Winds will pack a powerful punch along with coastal areas of New Jersey, New York, and New England Monday night through early Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, the coast of Maine into Nova Scotia could see gusts of up to 50 mph.

Transportation delays may come as a result of this storm across the affected areas. Heavy rain along the I-95 corridor from Philadelphia to Boston could cause significant delays due to poor visibility and the risk of accidents. Heavy rain combined with gusty winds can cause downed trees and power lines, leading to possible road closures and power outages for portions of southern New England.

Businesses in the area need to keep a close eye on this storm and should:

  • Expect business interruption due to power outages
  • Disruptions to ground logistics due to road closures and snow-covered roads
  • Prioritize cold weather concerns for outdoor workers
  • Ensure all employees and visitors on-site have a way to be notified of severe weather
