Double Trouble
The storm threatens to bring dangerous and life-threatening severe thunderstorms to parts of the South over the coming days. The most significant impact will occur from the Central and Southern Plains into the Lower and Mid-Mississippi River Valley from late Tuesday into Wednesday. This is the same area that was hit by severe thunderstorms days ago when more than 50 tornadoes tore across the region. The storm could once again bring tornadoes, large hail, damaging wind gusts, and flash flooding. The highest risk for tornadoes is on Wednesday from central Louisiana and southeastern Arkansas to Mississippi and western Alabama. There is an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 90 mph for Tuesday night and Wednesday.
By Thursday, the gusty storms will move into Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. Severe storms may also erupt farther north from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, where hail and damaging wind gusts will be a major concern.
Ice will also be a factor with this storm. With a very cold air mass in place across much of the Great Lakes and Northeast, any rain that may fall Tuesday night through Wednesday morning can freeze on contact with the ground. This can lead to a light coating of ice in places like Minneapolis, Green Bay, Detroit, and Pittsburgh.Businesses in the area need to keep a close eye on this system and should:
- Ensure all employees and visitors on-site have a way to be notified of severe weather
- Expect ground logistics disruption and road closures
- Be prepared for power outages and lengthy closures
- Establish an emergency communication plan and share with it your staff before the storm
