Businesses should be mindful that employees not to overexert themselves during the hottest hours of the day, hydrate as frequently as possible and stay cool, in air-conditioning or in the shade if possible, to avoid any adverse effects of the extreme temperatures, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

The AccuWeather HeatWave Counter and Severity Index™ classifies heat waves according to length and strength. For Houston, the designated limit of 100°F defines a heat wave as three or more days of temperatures above that mark. Depending on the degree to which this is surpassed and the duration, the scale is used to designate the strength of the heat wave, as follows: Moderate (3-6 days), Strong (7-10 days), Severe (11-14 days) and Extreme (15 days and higher).

Based on these criteria, Houston is predicted to experience a Severe Heat Wave, registering an AccuWeather HeatWave Severity Index™ of 13 between July 30 and Aug. 9.

Businesses in the area of the head dome should prepare for the following:

  • Severe pollution and extreme heat can contribute to air travel delays, shipment disruptions and trigger operational regulations
  • Heat-related illnesses for those that work outdoors should be top of mind
  • Plan for poor outdoor air quality to have a negative impact on job performance indoors and outdoors
