In February 2022, a dangerous wildfire quickly developed in the hilly terrain near Laguna Beach in Orange County, CA. The Emerald Fire consumed more than 145 acres and threatened residents and businesses, causing officials to issue mandatory evacuations ahead of the typical California “wildfire season.” AccuWeather provided more advance notice than any other source using the AccuWeather For Business Wildfire Proximity Alerting System. The same week, our meteorologists warned about the unusual February wildfire risk in California due to increasing warmth, gusty winds, low relative humidity, and the recent lack of rainfall. At the same time, government sources downplayed the risk and their outlooks did not include any areas in California. Using unique wildfire detection capabilities, AccuWeather for Business issued a Wildfire Proximity Alert to customers with assets located within 10 miles of the rapidly spreading wildfire. This alert was issued almost 30 minutes before any reports from local media or other sources, providing AFB customers critical preparation time to initiate emergency procedures, enhance safety, and plan for business continuity.
This is another example of a severe weather event where AccuWeather provided superior forecasts and impact descriptions to people, communities, and businesses, helping them better prepare and stay safe. AccuWeather’s new air pollution forecast powered by Plume Labs helps communities determine how the air quality is impacted by this wildfire and how to reduce the risk of exposure. AccuWeather For Business forecast tools and services allow you to uniquely gain the benefit of these forecasts, ensuring you stay ahead of any severe threat, and it’s all backed by our expert meteorologists and proven Superior Accuracy™.
