Nicholas takes aim at Texas

Written by Elizabeth Potts | Sep 13, 2021

A Flood of Trouble

A hurricane watch is in effect from Port Arkansas to Sargent and a tropical storm warning is in effect from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Freeport, Texas. Storm surge warnings are also in effect from Port Aransas to San Luis Pass, Texas. Conditions will deteriorate Monday afternoon and continue through Thursday. Once Nicholas makes landfall, possibly as a Category 1 hurricane, the storm is expected to linger along the gulf coast or just inland, raising the threat for major flooding in areas battered by Hurricane Ida.

Dangerous flooding is the biggest concern with this system. Heavy rain is expected Monday through Wednesday with the greatest threat near Houston, where up to 12 inches can fall with an AccuWeather Local StormMaxTM of 24 inches. This can cause significant flooding, from the Greater Houston area to southwestern Louisiana.
